Biography
Moscow, 18 January 1877: a frosty morning greeted the birth of Vladimir Rostislavovich Gardin, the boy who would grow into one of Russia’s silent-screen pioneers. Before the cameras rolled he trod the boards, but flickering light soon claimed him: in 1915 alone he strode through War and Peace and plunged into the soot-choked alleys of Peterburgskiye trushchobi, while 1924 saw him unveil the drama of Landlord. Behind the lens he proved equally commanding, coaxing performances from shadows and nitrate. Tatyana Bulakh became his off-screen leading lady in marriage. On 29 May 1965 the curtains closed in Leningrad, the city now called St. Petersburg, leaving a legacy etched in the first fragile frames of Russian cinema.
