Biography

Oakland, California, 10 November 1876: a restless boy named Walter C. Hackett arrives, already rehearsing dialogue in his head. By the early ’30s those whispered lines reached the screen—first in 1933’s The White Sister, then the séance-thriller Their Big Moment (1934), and finally the war-torn romance Love Under Fire (1937). Off-set he shared his life—and plenty of plot twists—with actress Marion Lorne. The curtain fell on 20 January 1944 in New York City, but the stories he spun keep flickering in the dark.
