Biography
A midwinter baby born 7 March 1866 in the pump-room town of Leamington Spa, Walter Howard grew up amid Warwickshire’s colonnades before trading spa water for greasepaint. Pen and performances vied for his attention: he scribbled thrillers even while treading boards, eventually seeing two takes of his stage hit The Midnight Wedding transferred to celluloid—once in 1912, then a grander 1914 retelling—while 1916 added military dash to his screen credits through The Lifeguardsman. Offstage he met his match in actress Agnes Chesson, the marriage fusing two theatrical firebrands. Fifty-six years later, on 6 October 1922, London’s lights dimmed for him one final time.
