Biography
Born in the misty River Blackwater town of Lismore, County Waterford, on 8 December 1876, Walter MacNamara crossed the Atlantic with stories in his suitcase. By 1914 he had channelled nationalist fire into the silent landmark *Ireland, a Nation*, followed two years later by the searing *Human Cargoes*. He stepped in front of the camera as well, and a decade later lent his voice to the urban drama *Side Street* (1929). MacNamara’s journey ended under the Californian sun on 21 June 1957, far from the Waterford hills but still spinning tales.
