Biography
A winter baby, Walter Turszinsky drew his first breath on 9 January 1874 amid the gabled rooftops of Danzig—then German, today Polish Gdańsk. Behind the camera he spun stories rather than wrote them in ink, crafting the 1914 melodrama *Gretchen Wendland*, the same year’s rallying cry *The Dawn of Freedom*, and the 1915 folk-bandit fable *Der springende Hirsch oder Die Diebe von Günstersburg*. Four months after that last picture premiered, the 41-year-old filmmaker’s own reel ran out in Berlin on 21 May 1915.
