Biography
Born on 12 June 1862 in the Kingdom-of-Hanover capital that is today Lower Saxony’s Hanover, Wilhelm Meyer-Förster grew into the storyteller whose ink would outlive him. His quill conjured the bittersweet romance of Alt Heidelberg—first printed as a novel, then re-imagined for the screen in 1923 and again, posthumously, as the Technicolor hit The Student Prince in 1954. Japanese audiences met his characters through Omoide in 1927, proof that his tales crossed oceans as easily as generations. Off the page he shared life’s scenes with wife Elsbeth. He took his final bow on 17 March 1934 in the Baltic resort of Heringsdorf, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, leaving behind a legacy that still echoes in castle courtyards and student songs.
