Biography
On a winter’s day—8 January 1824—London gained the mischievous gaze of William Wilkie Collins, a storyteller who would one day lace drawing-room politeness with plots of poisoned promises and vanished brides. While the city’s fog thickened, Collins sharpened his pen, gifting posterity the gas-lit suspense of The Woman in White (first filmed in 1948), the Raj-soaked sparkle of The Moonstone (screened in 1934), and the tangled affections of She Loves and Lies (captured on celluloid in 1920). Sixty-five years and many sleepless readers later, he closed his final chapter in the same restless metropolis, dying in London on 23 September 1889.
