Biography

"William Vaughn Moody, a multifaceted American talent, left an indelible mark as a professor, poet, author, and playwright. His early life was characterized by resilience; orphaned at a young age, he nevertheless propelled himself through prep school and ultimately, Harvard, where he earned a master's degree in English by 1895. His academic journey continued with instructing roles at Harvard and Radcliffe, culminating in his appointment as Professor of English Literature at the University of Chicago. However, in 1903, the call of creative expression proved stronger, prompting Moody to relinquish his academic post and dedicate himself entirely to writing. His enduring literary legacy is most vividly enshrined in works such as \"A History of English Literature,\" the acclaimed plays \"The Great Divide\" and \"The Faith Healer,\" and the evocative lyrical drama \"The Masque of Judgment.\" A poignant chapter began on July 5, 1909, when Moody married Harriet Converse Tilden, a Chicago high school English teacher, at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Québec, Canada. Tragically, their nascent happiness was cut short. While likely on their honeymoon voyage in the South Atlantic, Moody was struck by a severe illness. What initially baffled his physicians was eventually revealed to be an inoperative brain tumor. Barely a year after the first onset of symptoms, William Vaughn Moody passed away in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on October 17, 1910. His life, though brief, continued to cast a long shadow. The 1948 book \"A House in Chicago\" by Olivia H. Dunbar chronicles Harriet Moody's romance with William and the profound impact of their union. It also reveals how, in the years following his death, their home transformed into a vibrant intellectual and artistic sanctuary, drawing many prominent figures of the era."
