Biography
A gambler’s wit and a poet’s tongue collided on 19 May 1876 in Benicia, California, the day Wilson Mizner entered the world. By the Roaring Twenties he had hustled his way from frontier saloons to the glare of Warner Brothers sound stages, churning sly, street-smart dialogue for The Mind Reader (1933), Frisco Jenny (1932) and Hard to Handle (1933). Off-screen he collected wives the way others collected poker chips; the last to hold his attention was Mary Adelaide Moore Yerkes. The final roll came early—3 April 1933—in Los Angeles, the city he both mocked and immortalized.
