Biography
Born under the domes of Kazan on 5 August 1864, Yevgeni Chirikov grew up amid the mingled scents of the Volga and ink. His pen soon carved stories that travelled farther than he ever could: the mountain-shadowed fable Devi gory reached screens in 1919, while the aching romance Lyubov statskogo sovetnika had already flickered into life four years earlier. Exile carried him westward; he breathed his last in Prague on 18 January 1932, leaving the twin lights of his films still glimmering behind him.
