Biography

Rio de Janeiro, 1885: a city of hills and harbor lights greeted the birth of Alberto Botelho, the boy who would grow up to frame Brazil’s earliest moving dreams. Behind the camera he became both eye and architect, coaxing stories from silver-nitrate shadows. In 1909 he unveiled *La Chicanera*, then startled audiences again in 1913 with the courtroom mystery *O Crime de Paula Matos*, and a decade later returned to the backlands for the poetic *Alma Sertaneja*. Ninety-one years after his first breath, the same riverside city closed the lens on his life in 1973, leaving the reels still spinning.
