Biography
Born in the timber-frame town of Springe, Lower Saxony, on 2 February 1880, Curt A. Stark sprinted from provincial stages to the flickering frontier of early German cinema. Within a single explosive year—1914—he stood both behind and in front of the camera for three pioneering one-reelers: the rally-cry drama *The Dawn of Freedom*, the bittersweet romance *Gretchen Wendland*, and the playful royal caper *Ihre Hoheit*. Off-set, he shared his life with screen luminary Henny Porten, their marriage merging two of the era’s brightest spotlights. Fate cut the final frame short on 2 October 1916, when Stark died amid the Carpathian mists of Transylvania, Romania, leaving behind a trio of films that still whisper the first breaths of German moviemaking.
