Biography
A New Year’s baby of 1879, Edward Dillon first drew breath amid the clang of Manhattan streets. By the 1910s he had swapped the city’s roar for flicker of klieg lights, carving a niche between slapstick and melodrama: he coaxed laughs in Help! Help! Police! and suspense in The Winning Stroke, both released in 1919, then rolled the dice on fate-driven drama with 1926’s The Dice Woman. Dillon’s eye moved from performance to calling the shots behind the camera, guiding actors with the same ease he once charmed audiences. Off-set, Frances stood beside him as his wife. Four months past his 54th birthday, he died quietly in Hollywood on 11 July 1933, leaving the screen a shade dimmer.
