Biography

A summer day in 1881—30 June, to be exact—welcomed George K. Rolands into the world, setting the stage for a storyteller who would help shape cinema’s infancy. Barely into his thirties, he steered audiences through the dizzying maze of Trapped in the Great Metropolis (1914), then pulled them deeper into human complexity with The Web of Life (1917), and finally sent them home wrestling with bittersweet longing in Breaking Home Ties (1922).
