Biography
Before sound ever hit the screen, Juan María Codina was already bending light and shadow to his will. In 1913 he unveiled Tonto de la huerta, a silent vignette that let rural Spain laugh at itself; four years later he summoned the demon of ambition in Mefista (1917), followed by the razor-sharp fable Codicia (1918). The projectors stopped turning on 24 February 1936, but the frames he left behind still flicker with his sly, restless vision.
