Biography
Courtland, Mississippi, greeted Lawrence B. McGill on 22 February 1867, and from that small-town start he sprinted toward footlights and film stock. By 1914 he was steering the panoramic pages of *America* onto the screen; four years later he guided both *The First Law* and *The Girl from Bohemia* through the frenetic last days of silent-era Fort Lee. Between calls of “Action!” he still found time to court and marry actress Gertrude Shipman, his off-screen leading lady. The final curtain fell on 23 February 1928 in Waldo, Florida, one day after his sixty-first birthday, closing a life lived in bright klieg lights and long shadows.
