Biography
The year 1876 saw the birth of American naturalist Raymond Lee Ditmars in Newark, New Jersey, a significant detail being his middle name, "Lee," bestowed by his Confederate veteran father as a tribute to Gen. Robert E. Lee. His formal education culminated in 1891 with a graduation from the Barnard Military School. Not long after, Ditmars embarked on his professional journey at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, where he meticulously mounted and labeled insect specimens. This initial tenure lasted five years before he transitioned to the fast-paced world of journalism as a reporter for the "New York Times." A pivotal moment arrived during an interview with the director of the nascent New York Zoological Park. Observing Ditmars' profound enthusiasm for wildlife, the director astutely proposed a career path more aligned with his passion than reporting for the "Times," an offer Ditmars readily embraced. His dedication quickly propelled him from his inaugural role as curator of reptiles to overseeing the entire department of mammals. Following the passing of the park's then-director, Ditmars ascended to the institution's highest leadership position. This elevated platform allowed him to traverse the globe, meticulously documenting diverse animal species in their natural environments through both extensive literary works and pioneering cinematic endeavors. His distinguished service to the Zoological Park continued uninterrupted until his death in 1942.
