Biography
A midwinter baby, William Cavanaugh arrived in Manhattan on 31 January 1874 and grew up intoxicated by the flicker of gaslight and the rumble of elevated trains. By his twenties he had swapped the city’s roar for the hush of celluloid, stepping in front of the camera for Traffic in Souls (1913), then sliding behind it to shepherd Evangeline (1914) and The $5,000,000 Counterfeiting Plot (1914) from script to screen. Sixty-two springs later, on 21 May 1936, he took his final bow across the Hudson in Edgewater, New Jersey, leaving the projectors still humming with his name.
