Set against the salt-stained backdrop of Marseille, En rade (1927) explores the suffocating weight of domesticity and the agonizing lure of the horizon. Jean, the restless son of a hardworking laundress, spends his days wandering the docks, haunted by a 'sea fever' that renders his land-bound life meaningless. His path crosses with a nameless waitress at a local dive bar, a woman equally trapped by the cycle of service and the grime of the port. Together, they form a fragile bond built on shared longing rather than romantic heat. When a mysterious sailor offers Jean a chance to escape on a departing vessel, the film shifts from a study of stagnation to a tense examination of courage and betrayal.
