Meanwhile, back in the crab-apple hamlet where cobblestones remember every footstep, Annie, half-mad with grief, is coaxed back to life by Philip Ray—the boy who once carved their initials into the same sycamore whose roots now cradle Enoch’s abandoned wedding ring. Time, that sly puppeteer, lets Philip grow from diffident playmate to steadfast provider, until wedding bells echo over the dunes like gulls scolding the wind. One storm-ripe dusk, a tattered silhouette appears at the lane’s end: Enoch, resurrected but unmade, eyes hollowed by visions of shipmates devoured by sharks.
