Summary
In the sun-drenched, class-stratified coastal town of Harborsport, a mother's fervent social aspirations collide head-on with her daughter's burgeoning independence and moral compass. Mrs. Harrison, a matriarch obsessed with advantageous unions, orchestrates a marriage between her spirited daughter, Gladsome, and Vincent Bradshaw, the scion of her trusted, yet duplicitous, financial advisor, James Bradshaw. This meticulously planned ascent up the social ladder is immediately jeopardized by Gladsome's empathetic connection with the local working-class fishermen. When James Bradshaw, in a display of elitist disdain, attempts to sever these ties by expelling the laborers from his property, Gladsome galvanizes their collective spirit, leading a defiant reclamation of their communal space. Her subsequent arrest for 'rabble-rousing' ironically frees her, albeit briefly, from her mother's suffocating agenda, setting the stage for a serendipitous encounter with 'Alphabet' Carter, a financial savant on holiday. Their instant, profound connection blossoms into a proposal, yet Gladsome's candid revelation of her mother's machinations introduces a poignant hesitation. As Carter returns to the cutthroat world of Wall Street, he uncovers James Bradshaw's egregious malfeasance, exposing the very foundation of Mrs. Harrison's perceived security as a house of cards. Confronted with imminent ruin, James accelerates the ill-fated union of Gladsome and Vincent. However, on the cusp of this coerced matrimony, Gladsome, empowered by truth and genuine affection, orchestrates her own escape, eloping with Carter. The ensuing revelation of James's financial treachery ultimately shatters Mrs. Harrison's illusions, paving the way for a heartfelt reconciliation with her daughter and a newfound appreciation for the integrity embodied by her new son-in-law. This narrative deftly explores themes of social mobility, financial ethics, and the enduring power of authentic connection against the backdrop of societal artifice.
Synopsis
When Mrs. Harrison arrives in Harborsport for her vacation, she announces her plan to marry Gladsome, her daughter, to Vincent Bradshaw, the son of her financial advisor James Bradshaw. To keep Gladsome from socializing with the local fishermen, James drives them from his property, but they organize under her and force their way back. Arrested for rabble-rousing, Gladsome is bailed out of jail by James and later meets "Alphabet" Carter, a vacationing financial wizard, for whom she has an immediate attraction. Equally enchanted, Carter proposes, but Gladsome hesitates, telling him about her social-climbing mother. Carter returns to Wall Street, hears that James has squandered Harrison's money and confronts him with the truth. Fearful of exposure, James rushes his son's marriage, but on the day of the wedding, Gladsome slips away and weds Carter. When Mrs. Harrison is told of James's misdealings, she is reconciled with Gladsome and welcomes Carter into the family.
