5.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Al mandoubain remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much patience you have for 1930s slapstick that moves at a frantic, almost dizzying pace. If you’re a fan of the El Gazaerli clan, you’ll find this stuff gold. If you’re looking for a tight, logical narrative? Forget it. You’ll probably hate it. It’s messy. It’s loud. It’s very, very old.
Watching Al Mandoubain feels like finding a dusty reel in a basement that someone forgot to label. The humor is so specific to its time that it feels like eavesdropping on a conversation from another planet. Shalom is in it, doing his usual thing, and honestly, the way he bounces off the rest of the cast is the only reason the movie doesn't completely collapse under its own weight.
There’s a scene about halfway through—I think—where the dialogue just starts overlapping until nobody can hear anyone. It’s not elegant. It’s just noise, but it made me laugh because it feels so unscripted. It’s like they just let the cameras roll while everyone had a minor meltdown.
It’s not as polished as something like The Primrose Path, which had a bit more of a refined touch. Here, everything is blunt. The jokes are physical, the reactions are over-the-top, and the lighting changes randomly between cuts. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in The Hayseed, where the chaos is basically the main character.
There’s a specific bit of business with a chair that goes on for way too long. Way too long. You can feel the director trying to decide if he should cut, and then he just… doesn't. It becomes this weird, hypnotic, awkward dance.
The whole thing feels like a stage play that escaped into the streets of Cairo. It’s not trying to be high art, and thank god for that. It just wants you to watch these people bicker. It’s charming, if you’re into that sort of thing. If not, it’s just a headache. Either way, you won’t forget it for at least an hour after it ends. 🎞️
