6.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. As You Desire Me remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you want to watch a movie that feels like a fever dream from 1932, absolutely. If you need your plots to be tidy and logical, you might want to skip this one. It's for the folks who like their drama a bit moody and their leading ladies to have eyes that hold ten lifetimes of secrets.
Greta Garbo is just... different. You watch her move across the screen and it’s like she’s floating through a different dimension than the rest of the cast. There's this scene in the cabaret where she’s singing, and the camera just stays on her face, and you honestly stop caring about the plot entirely. She looks like she’s remembering something she really, really wants to forget.
The whole premise is weirdly desperate. A soldier shows up and basically demands she remember being his wife. It’s a bit possessive, right? Like he’s trying to edit her personality to fit his own nostalgia. It reminded me a little of how The Millionaire's Double plays with the idea of mistaken identity, though this feels way darker.
I found myself wondering if she actually wants to be found. Is being a stranger in a bar better than being someone's ghost? The movie doesn't really give you a straight answer, which I appreciate. It doesn't treat the audience like we’re children who need every motive explained in a tidy package.
It’s not as punchy as some other stuff from the era. Sometimes the dialogue feels like it’s being read from a textbook, especially when the supporting cast is trying to catch up to Garbo’s energy. But who cares? It’s a mood piece. It’s about the hollow space between who we are and who people need us to be.
I don't think I'll be thinking about the ending next week, but I'll definitely remember the way she looked in that white dress. It’s one of those performances that just sort of sticks to your brain like lint. Not perfect, definitely a bit strange, but real in a way that matters. 🕯️
