6.2/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Barátságos arcot kérek remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for 1930s European cinema and don't mind a bit of crackle on the audio, Barátságos arcot kérek is a fun curiosity. If you need pacing that moves like a modern thriller, you will probably be checking your watch by the ten-minute mark. It is a movie for people who like to see how stories were told before everything had to be loud and fast.
The whole premise feels like a lighthearted joke that keeps spiraling. Watching these characters navigate their social circles is like watching a very polite, very confusing dance. Everyone is so well-dressed, even when the plot gets messy. It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Lady in Danger, though they are certainly their own beasts.
I noticed a side character in the background during the café scene who seems to be holding a newspaper that is clearly upside down. It’s a tiny thing, but once you spot it, you can't stop looking. Why didn't anyone catch that? Maybe the director just didn't care. I kind of love that.
The dialogue moves quickly, almost like a stage play that someone decided to film on a whim. There is a specific reaction shot from Antal Páger that lasts way too long. It starts off as a genuine look of shock but ends up feeling like he just forgot what his next line was. It’s actually pretty funny if you catch the vibe.
It’s not a masterpiece, and it doesn't try to be. It just exists, which is a rare quality these days. You can feel the age of the film in every frame, but there is a strange comfort in that. It doesn't need to be profound. It just needs to be there, like an old photograph you find in a shoebox. 🎞️
Some of the performances are pure theater, big gestures and all. It’s not subtle. But when you’re watching stuff from this era, like Oliver Twist, you sort of expect that high-octane acting. It grows on you, I promise.
Don't overthink the plot. It’s not going to lead anywhere that will change your life. Just enjoy the ride and the hats.
