8.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 8.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Born to Fight remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you are in the mood for some very old-school melodrama and don’t mind a plot that feels like it was scribbled on a napkin during a lunch break. If you like classic mountain westerns where the dog is smarter than the humans, you’ll have a grand time. If you need your movies to make logical sense, stay far away.
The whole thing kicks off with a pup getting saved from a lake. It’s the kind of scene that hits you right in the heart, even if the camera work is a bit shaky. Boy—the dog—is basically the best actor in the entire cast.
There is this one guy, Brent, who is just cartoonishly evil. I mean, the guy is poaching foxes and making weird advances on people every five minutes. It’s almost impressive how little the movie tries to give him any depth. He just loves being the guy you want to see get bitten by a wolf.
The middle of the film gets a little messy. Suddenly we are doing the whole 'dog lives in the wild' thing, which felt like a weird pivot to a nature documentary. The wolf pack sequence is surprisingly wild, though. Seeing the dog call in his buddies to take down a group of armed men? That’s cinema, baby. 🐺
I couldn't help but think about how much simpler things felt compared to something like The Kiss of Hate. There’s no big message here. It’s just people yelling at each other in the woods and a dog trying his best to keep everyone alive.
The fight scenes are hilariously dated. You can tell they aren't actually hitting each other half the time. It gives the whole thing this charming, low-budget feel that honestly made me like it more. It’s not trying to be a masterpiece.
If you’ve seen One Minute to Play, you know that older movies often rely on these big, broad emotional beats to keep you hooked. This one does that, but with more growling. It’s imperfect, it’s a bit silly, but it definitely held my attention.
By the time they reached the final standoff, I was fully invested in the dog. I really didn't care if the humans made it, but if anything happened to Boy, I would have turned it off immediately. 🐾
