6.7/10

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Boxing Gloves remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
"Boxing Gloves" is one of those old-school shorts that just *hits* right if you're in the mood for some classic, innocent chaos. If you grew up on Our Gang or just appreciate the pure joy of kids putting on a show, this one's definitely worth a look today. Folks expecting high-octane action or sophisticated storytelling, though? You'll probably find it a bit slow, maybe even boring, but that's kinda the point.
The whole thing kicks off with Harry Spear and Allen 'Farina' Hoskins trying to get a boxing match going. Harry’s all business, trying to drum up interest like a tiny promoter, while Farina just kinda goes along, often with this great wide-eyed expression. They set up a big bout between Joe Cobb and Norman 'Chubby' Chaney. Joe looks like he means business, even though he's still a kid; Chubby, well, he's Chubby, a big lovable presence.
It’s not really about the boxing *skill*, obviously. It's about the spectacle the kids create. The ring, the crowd, the whole buildup. You can tell they put a lot of effort into making it feel like a real event, even if it's all just backyard stuff.
There’s a moment when Harry is trying to explain the rules, and it’s just this brilliant bit of kid-logic. He's so serious, but it’s all just made up on the spot. And Farina, just watching him, **you gotta love it.** The crowd scenes have this fantastic energy. All the other Rascals are there, shouting, getting into it. You really feel like you're just another kid sitting there, watching this unfold. 👀
The fight itself is exactly what you'd expect: more flailing and stumbling than actual punches. But it's the reactions that make it. Joe Cobb’s determined frown, Chubby’s slightly bewildered look when he gets pushed around. There's a spot where the referee (another kid, naturally) gets totally tangled up, and it’s a genuinely funny bit of physical comedy. *That poor kid.* He's trying so hard to be official, then just gets swept up in the mess.
I particularly liked the bit where the bell for the round is just some metal pot being clanged. It’s so DIY, so perfect for the Our Gang vibe. It reminds you how simple entertainment used to be, and how effective it could still be. No fancy effects, just kids being kids. 🌟
The whole short just zips by, a quick blast of pure, unadulterated fun. It's got that undeniable Hal Roach charm, where the kids are allowed to be mischievous but never truly mean. It’s about the spirit of play, really. _The spirit of play._ It’s a nice little escape, especially if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed by… everything else. It really makes you smile.
Honestly, it’s a great example of how simple stories, well-executed by natural performers (even tiny ones), can still hold up. It doesn't try to be anything it isn't, and that's refreshing. It's just kids putting on a show, and you're invited to watch. Give it a shot. 👍
