5.4/10

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. By Appointment Only remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you probably won't find much here unless you’re really into the specific cadence of 1930s melodramas. It’s a quiet, slightly dusty film that moves at a pace I’d describe as 'leisurely' if I were being generous, or 'stuck in the mud' if I’m being honest. If you like classic tearjerkers where everyone is just a little too polite about their existential crises, go for it. If you prefer movies that actually move, maybe look at something like The Great Accident instead.
The whole thing hinges on this doctor who clearly skipped the 'professional boundaries' module in med school. A woman drops dead in his office, and his first instinct isn't just to report it, but to immediately insert himself into the kid's life. It’s weird.
The performances are exactly what you’d expect—lots of stiff collars and dramatic looks out of windows. Sally O'Neil is trying her best to carry the emotional weight, but the script keeps handing her lines that feel like they were written by someone who had only ever heard of grief through a telegram.
Watching this made me think about Schoolday Love, mostly because both films seem trapped in a bubble of their own making. Neither one feels like it’s actually talking to a modern audience, which is fine, I guess. But you can feel the movie trying so hard to convince you that this doctor is a 'good guy' for meddling in family affairs. I wasn't buying it.
The dialogue is often just people explaining their own motivations to each other. 'I feel guilty so I must do this.' Thanks for the recap, buddy. We saw the scene.
It’s not a bad movie, really. It’s just very, very small. It’s the kind of thing you watch on a rainy Tuesday when you’ve already exhausted your watchlist of 'actual' movies. The ending is predictable, but in a way that feels comfortable, like an old sweater that’s missing a button. 🧥
I wouldn't go out of my way to find it, but if it pops up on some late-night rotation, it’s a perfectly harmless way to lose an hour. Just don't go looking for high drama. It’s more of a low-stakes character study that forgot to study the characters all that deeply.
