9.2/10

A definitive 9.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Casamento é Negócio? remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only watch this if you are a completionist for early cinema or if you have a weird fascination with how people acted before modern acting was really a thing. If you are looking for a breezy Saturday afternoon watch, you might find this a bit of a slog. People who hate slow-burn, stage-like dialogue should probably skip it.
There is something about the way characters in these old films just stand there and declare their feelings. It is not subtle. Morena Mendonça is at the center of it all, looking torn, but mostly just looking like she is waiting for her cue to walk across the room.
The whole plot is basically: Rich guy shows up, offers a life of luxury, and the other guy is out there trying to find oil. It feels like a precursor to the kind of melodrama you see in Dancing Mothers, though without the same level of bite.
It is genuinely funny how the movie treats the oil industry like it is a magic ticket to happiness. The humble suitor talks about his investments with the kind of wide-eyed hope that makes you want to reach through the screen and warn him. It is painfully naive.
I found myself wondering if they actually filmed these scenes near a real oil site or if it was just a painted backdrop. The lighting makes everything look like it is happening inside a toaster. There is a specific scene where the two men have a confrontation that goes on for way too long, and the silence in the room feels less like tension and more like they both forgot their next line.
Compared to the grittier stuff like The Signal Tower, this feels much more theatrical and safe. It plays out like a play that got lost on its way to the stage. You can tell they were trying to capture something real about the financial desperation of the time, but it mostly just feels like a list of chores for the actors to perform.
It is a bit of a relic. Definitely not for everyone, but if you like seeing how people used to think about 'marriage as a business,' it is an interesting enough curiosity. Just don't go in expecting a masterpiece. It is just a movie, doing its best with very little.
Also, the ending? Predictable as a sunrise. 🙄
