3.9/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 3.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Clancy of the Mounted remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like black-and-white serials where everyone is constantly galloping toward the horizon, you’ll probably find something to love here. It is definitely not for anyone who needs high-concept pacing or modern camera work. If you hate movies that feel like they were made on a shoestring budget in the middle of a desert, skip it.
There is something really honest about how Clancy of the Mounted just throws you right into the fire. The premise is simple: brother against brother, law against blood. It doesn't waste time on long, fancy speeches about duty.
Sometimes, the background extras in this look like they just wandered out of a saloon in The Brazen Beauty to stand in the frame for a few seconds. You can tell who is supposed to be the bad guy just by how much shade their hat is throwing over their eyes. It’s funny, really.
There’s a specific sequence where someone is chasing someone else through a canyon that feels like it’s been edited by someone who was falling asleep at the desk. You get a shot of a guy looking left, then a guy looking right, and then a jump cut that makes it look like they teleported three miles away. It works, somehow.
I caught myself wondering why everyone in these old films is always so sweaty. They’re in the Yukon, right? Shouldn't it be cold? Maybe the sun in 1933 hit differently. Whatever, it adds to the messiness of it all.
It’s not a masterpiece, and it doesn't try to be. It’s a movie that knows its place on the bottom half of a double feature. You might find yourself checking your phone during the slow parts, but the moments where the stuntmen actually do something dangerous are worth the wait. 🐎
It definitely feels more grounded than the overly polished stuff we get today. Even if the plot holes are big enough to drive a wagon through, I enjoyed the ride. It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Three on a Match, even if they are totally different genres.
