6.3/10

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Come to Dinner remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you are a massive nerd for 1930s studio gossip. If you’re looking for a tight, funny parody that holds up on its own, skip it. You will probably hate this if you don't know who the heck these people are trying to imitate. But for the curious? It's a trip.
The whole thing feels like a dinner party where nobody quite knows the person they're talking to. It’s a parody of the high-society drama Dinner at Eight, but instead of the real stars, we get what feels like the B-team auditioning in a basement. 🎭
Watching these actors try to nail those classic, clipped mid-Atlantic accents is… something else. It’s like hearing someone try to do a celebrity impression they only heard once while half-asleep. There’s a specific kind of awkwardness to the Jean Harlow impersonation that made me want to look away, but I couldn't. It’s just too earnest.
The pacing is all over the place. One minute they're shouting, the next they're staring blankly at a plate of fake food. I’m pretty sure one of the extras in the back is just waiting for the clock to hit five so they can go home. You can actually see the exact moment someone forgets their line, pauses, and then decides to just wink at the camera instead. It’s charming in a 'please stop' kind of way.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic, nonsensical energy in Moonshine and Noses, though without the excuse of being a full-on slapstick riot. It’s just… people pretending to be other people who are pretending to be rich. 🤷♂️
Is it a masterpiece? Hardly. But it’s a weird artifact. It feels less like a movie and more like a home video someone made after watching too many glossy MGM features. Sometimes the most interesting stuff isn't the stuff that works, it's the stuff that’s just barely holding on.
If you're in the mood for something that makes you go 'what did I just watch?', put this on. Then maybe cleanse your palate with The Frozen North if you need to remember what actual craft looks like.
