6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Counterfeit Lady remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that run just over an hour and move like they are late for a bus, you will have a ball. This is pure fluff, but the kind that actually tastes good. If you are looking for deep character arcs or a movie that takes its own plot seriously, move along. You will probably hate this if you get hung up on logic or how exactly people keep finding each other in a giant city without cell phones.
Phyllis Fowler is the kind of character I wish we saw more of today—sharp, opportunistic, and completely uninterested in playing by anyone’s rules. The opening sequence where she charms her way into that jewelry store is just… chef's kiss. She doesn't even try that hard, and that’s what makes it work. Everyone else is just a background noise to her hustle.
It’s funny how these old B-movies handle tension. They don't give you time to breathe. You compare it to something like Cornered and you realize how much smaller the stakes feel here, but in a way that actually helps the movie. It’s not trying to change the world. It’s just trying to steal a diamond and get you to chuckle.
Is the acting perfect? Hardly. Some of the gangsters look like they are just waiting for their lunch break, leaning against the walls with all the menace of a damp napkin. But then you have moments where the dialogue snaps back and forth so quickly it feels like a tennis match. 🎾
I found myself wondering if this would pair well with a double feature of The Shady Lady. Probably. There is a specific kind of 1930s kinetic energy that just doesn't exist in modern cinema anymore. Everything today is so… heavy. So serious. This movie? It’s light as air.
Don't try to track the diamond’s location on a map. You will lose your mind. Just watch the hats. The hats in this movie are incredible. Honestly, that’s reason enough to watch it.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not going to win any awards. It’s just a damn good time if you let it be. 🎥
