7.4/10

A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Der Kosak und die Nachtigall remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you’re a fan of vintage European cinema from the mid-30s, you might get a kick out of this. If you need pacing that feels like it was edited for an audience with an attention span longer than a goldfish, stay away. It’s definitely a film for people who enjoy theatrical stuffiness and don't mind when a movie stops dead for a musical number that adds absolutely nothing to the plot.
The whole thing feels like a stage play that someone accidentally left the cameras running for. The sets look like they’re made of cardboard and wishful thinking. Honestly, I found myself staring at a background prop in the third act for a solid minute because the dialogue just… stopped being interesting.
It’s all very dramatic. Everyone is shouting their intentions at each other in a way that feels like they’re trying to reach the back row of a theater. Fritz Imhoff is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, and you can see him sweating through the scenes. I’m not sure if it’s the character’s stress or just the stage lights, but it’s distracting.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic, self-serious energy you find in something like Arsène Lupin, but without the heist charm. Instead, we get a lot of posturing. So much posturing.
There’s this one moment where a character walks through a door, and it clearly didn't close properly behind them. The rest of the scene, they’re just standing there and you can see the hallway behind them. It’s weirdly grounding, seeing a technical mistake like that. Makes it feel human.
The plot is messy. It tries to juggle too many subplots about honor and singing, and frankly, I stopped caring about who was who by the second hour. It’s not quite as chaotic as Midnatssjælen, but it shares that same feeling of a story getting lost in its own atmosphere.
If you watch this, do it for the weird historical curiosity of it all. Just don’t expect to be moved. You’ll be too busy noticing how the background extras are all trying to look busy without actually doing anything. 🙄
