5.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Easy on the Eyes remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you are the type of person who digs through bargain bins at antique stores just to see what kind of weird junk is hiding in the back. If you want a tight, logical story, keep walking. You’ll probably hate this if you have a low tolerance for characters who make truly baffling life choices for no reason other than a pretty face. ✈️
The whole premise starts with a Marine pilot being an absolute creep from the sky. He sees a woman sunbathing and decides his entire career and life depend on meeting her. It’s one of those movies that wants you to think this is charmingly bold, but it just feels like the guy needs a hobby or a therapist.
The boyfriend is a journeyman boxer, which is just convenient for the plot. You know exactly what happens—they square off, there’s some shouting, and a lot of posturing. It’s like watching a playground fight but with older clothes and more dramatic lighting.
The pacing is all over the place. Sometimes it feels like they’re trying to make a serious drama, then five minutes later, someone is pulling a slapstick move that doesn't fit the mood at all. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Doubling in the Quickies, but with less focus.
There’s a specific scene near the middle where the Marine tries to talk his way out of a confrontation, and he just stares into space for a solid ten seconds. It’s like he forgot his line, but they kept it in anyway. I kind of loved that. It felt more real than any of the rehearsed lines.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even a particularly good movie by any standard measure. But it has this weird, jagged soul that makes you pay attention even when you’re bored. It isn't as coherent as Golden Mountains, but it definitely has more personality in its flaws.
If you watch it, don't overthink the romance. Just treat it like a curiosity. Sometimes the best way to watch a film is to stop asking why it exists and just watch the mess unfold. 🥊
