6.5/10

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Faithful Hearts remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you’re looking for something that’ll blow your mind or make you rethink cinema, Faithful Hearts isn’t it. It’s the kind of movie you put on when you want to see people in nice suits talk about their feelings without actually, you know, really talking about them. If you love old-fashioned British melodrama, you’ll probably find something to enjoy here. If you prefer movies where things actually happen, stay away. Far away.
Herbert Marshall is, well, Herbert Marshall. He plays the naval officer with that signature clipped tone that makes you wonder if he’s ever actually felt a real human emotion in his life. It’s perfectly fine, I guess. He’s very busy being engaged to a 'society girl' and looking worried about his career. The whole thing feels a bit like watching a very well-mannered train wreck in slow motion. 🚂
The turning point—or the thing that’s supposed to be the turning point—is when this girl shows up claiming to be his daughter. The movie really wants us to feel the weight of this secret, but the pacing is so polite that the emotional stakes feel like they’re being served on a tea saucer. It’s not quite as punchy as The House of Glass, which managed to make its melodrama feel like a life-or-death situation.
Honestly, the movie gets better when it stops trying to be so dignified. There’s a moment near the end where things almost get messy, and for a second, I thought, 'Oh, here we go!' But then it immediately pulls back into safe territory. It’s like watching a puppy try to growl and then just deciding to nap instead.
It’s not as chaotic as The Tornado or as strange as some of the other stuff from that era. It’s just... there. It exists. You could do worse on a rainy Tuesday, but you could definitely do better. 🤷♂️
Maybe it’s the way the dialogue is written, but nobody really talks to each other. They just sort of deliver speeches at one another. It’s a bit exhausting after ninety minutes. Still, if you like watching people try to keep their secrets behind a stiff collar, you’ll get exactly what you came for.
