5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Freedom of the Seas remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a Sunday afternoon spent in a dusty attic, Freedom of the Seas is a solid pick. It is definitely not for anyone who needs high-octane drama or a plot that makes perfect sense at every turn. If you enjoy watching a character get pushed around until they finally snap, you will probably have a good time.
The whole premise is just a classic setup. Our guy is a clerk, he is boring, and he is pining for his boss's daughter. It is the kind of stuff you see in every movie from this era, but there is something about the way Clifford Mollison plays it that keeps you watching. He has this wide-eyed look, like he is constantly surprised that the world is actually happening to him.
Things fall apart—or come together, depending on how you look at it—when an old friend shows up to drag him off his path. It reminded me a bit of the frantic, messy energy found in Stage Struck. You can just feel the movie sweating to get the comedy right, and sometimes the timing is just a hair off. But honestly? That makes it feel more real.
The pacing is all over the place. It jumps from a quiet office conversation to some chaotic social situation so fast you might get whiplash. Sometimes the movie stops for a bit just to let a joke land, and it sits there for a few seconds too long. It is awkward, sure, but it is also kind of endearing.
It is not trying to be a deep dive into the human condition. It is not trying to change the world. It is just a story about a guy who has no spine until he suddenly does. Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it better than sitting through another generic, polished modern comedy that feels like it was written by a committee? Absolutely.
Also, don't ask me about the ending. It just sort of happens, and then you are looking at the credits. It leaves you feeling like you just walked out of a party halfway through, which is a weirdly refreshing way to spend an hour or so. 🤷♂️
