5.6/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Het mysterie van de Mondscheinsonate remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a soft spot for pre-war European cinema that feels like it’s being performed in a drafty theater. If you’re looking for a tight, modern thriller, skip this. But if you like watching people in suits act very serious in rooms full of cigarette smoke, you might find something here.
The whole thing kicks off with a dancer getting shot right on stage. It’s dramatic, sure. But then it settles into that classic pattern of an inspector wandering around rooms, asking people questions, and looking grumpy. It reminded me a bit of the pacing issues in The Green Pack, where the plot feels like it’s struggling to keep up with the dialogue.
There’s a weird, stage-bound energy to the whole thing. You can practically hear the floorboards creaking under the actors' feet. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make the movie feel tiny. Like, the world exists only in these three rooms.
The inspector is the kind of guy who just stares at people until they get nervous. It works, I guess? But sometimes he just lingers in a shot for five seconds too long. It’s a bit funny if you think about it.
It’s not as energetic as Quick Triggers, that’s for sure. It’s more of a sit-down-and-listen kind of movie. Sometimes the dialogue gets so formal it’s hard to tell who is actually lying and who is just being Dutch. I’m not sure the script even knew.
There’s a moment where a character enters a room, stops dead, looks at a vase, and then walks out. Why? I have no idea. The movie doesn't care, so I stopped caring too. It just happens.
Don't go in expecting a masterpiece. It's a bit like watching a forgotten play on a rainy Tuesday. It’s imperfect, the pacing is a mess, but there’s a strange, quiet heart to it that you don't really see in movies today. Just don't look too hard at the background extras—they clearly have nowhere to be. 🎻🕵️♂️
