4.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. In the Wake of the Bounty remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have any interest in how movies used to be put together back when people still thought talkies were a brand new toy, In the Wake of the Bounty might be worth a look. It is definitely not for the casual viewer who wants fast pacing or fancy effects. But if you like old, crunchy, black-and-white stuff that smells like an attic, you’ll probably find something to dig into here. 🎥
It’s the story of the mutiny, obviously. We get a guy telling the story, looking back at all the chaos on the ship. It feels less like a narrative film and more like a staged reenactment you’d see at a museum, which honestly has its own kind of charm.
And yeah, Errol Flynn is in it. It’s wild seeing him before he became the massive, swashbuckling star everyone remembers. He’s just… there, finding his footing. It’s the kind of thing you only notice if you’re a total nerd for this stuff, but it makes you feel like you’re watching a rough draft of a legend.
It’s a bit dry. There’s no getting around that. It lacks the pulse you find in something like The Story of the Kelly Gang, which somehow managed to feel more alive despite being even older. This one feels like it’s trying to be a proper, respectable production, which actually makes it feel a bit stiff.
There’s a moment in the middle where the film just stops for a bit of scenery and exposition that goes on for a lifetime. I found myself checking my phone for a second, then looking back and realizing I hadn't missed a single beat of the actual plot. You could basically blink through ten minutes of this movie and still be totally fine.
Is it great? No. Does it feel like a human being actually bothered to film it rather than a computer generating a movie? Absolutely. It’s got that grainy, imperfect texture that you just don't get anymore. It feels like a relic. And sometimes, that’s enough to keep you watching until the credits roll. ⚓️
