7.2/10

A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Kinderarzt Dr. Engel remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you want high-stakes drama or something that pushes boundaries, look elsewhere. Kinderarzt Dr. Engel is basically a cinematic warm blanket. You will enjoy it if you like old-school, polite black-and-white dramas where everyone is just a little too nice. If you hate slow-burn romances or movies where the biggest conflict is a social misunderstanding, you’re going to be bored to tears within twenty minutes. 🏥
The whole thing feels like a stage play that escaped into the wild. You spend most of your time watching Dr. Engel be incredibly patient with crying children, which is fine, but it’s the violin-playing mother that really pulls the strings of the plot. It’s not subtle. You can practically see the writers holding up signs that say 'THEY SHOULD GET MARRIED NOW.'
It’s funny to compare this to something like Swing Time . Where that film has rhythm and snap, this one is content to just sit in an armchair and sip tea. It doesn't move with the same energy. Sometimes, I found myself checking my phone just to make sure the film hadn't frozen, because the pacing is just that… steady.
There’s a bit where the doctor talks to the kid about his mother, and it’s meant to be this big, heart-melting moment. Instead, I just kept noticing the weird shadow cast by the desk lamp. It’s flickering in a way that suggests the lighting crew was probably ready for lunch. 🥪
It reminds me a bit of the domestic stuff you see in Mother and Child , but with way less grit. You’re never worried about the characters. You know exactly where the ending is going from the moment the opening credits stop rolling. It’s a very safe, very predictable ride.
Is it bad? No. It’s just very contained. Like a box of chocolates that you’ve already eaten the best ones out of, leaving only the ones with the weird nut fillings. It’s fine, but you’re not rushing back to the box. 🍫
