6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Mystery Mountain remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for grainy, old-school serials where the plot changes its mind every five minutes, you might get a kick out of this. If you need logic, coherent pacing, or acting that doesn't feel like a stage play held in a garage, stay away. This is for the folks who like their cinema served with a side of static and questionable stunt work. 🤠
Mystery Mountain feels like it was written on the back of a napkin while the directors were already on set. Ken Maynard is doing his best, but there’s only so much you can do when the "Rattler" is basically just a guy in a rubber mask who pops up whenever the movie needs a scene to end.
The whole thing with the railroads and the transport companies feels like window dressing. It’s really just an excuse to have guys jump off horses and pretend to be shocked when they see a mask. There’s a moment where a character gets unmasked and I’m pretty sure the actor was just as confused as I was about why he was there.
It’s not as slick as The Wyoming Wildcat, which at least had a slightly more focused energy. Here, the momentum is all over the place. One minute we’re in a high-stakes standoff, the next we’re watching someone walk through a canyon for way too long. It’s the kind of pacing that makes you check your watch, realize it’s only been twelve minutes, and then just sigh.
Don't expect the charm of The Buttinsky or anything resembling a cohesive story. This is pure, unfiltered 1930s chaos. It’s messy, it’s loud, and the masks are frankly embarrassing. But honestly? It’s kind of funny to watch them try so hard to keep the mystery alive when the audience figured it out in the first reel.
Watch it if you want to turn your brain off and just look at old cowboys hitting each other. Just don't look too closely at the ropes—they’re visibly fake in almost every shot. You can tell the crew was just trying to get through the day. Maybe they were, too.
