A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ozzie of the Mounted remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have about five minutes to spare and like seeing where the whole Disney empire actually started, this is worth a watch. Animation nerds will love the rubbery movement, but anyone looking for a deep story will probably hate how random it is.
It is basically just a chase sequence in the snow. Oswald is a Mountie, and he's after Pete, who is just a big jerk as usual.
The first thing that caught my eye was the horse Ozzie rides. It is not a real horse, but a mechanical one that looks like a metal barrel with legs.
There is a funny bit where he feeds it oil from a can. It feels like a very early version of some sci-fi gadget, even though it’s just a silly 1928 gag.
The way the horse moves is so janky. It's almost like the animators were still figuring out how legs work. 🐴
I noticed the snow looks more like white paint than actual cold stuff. It does not matter though because the energy is so high.
Pete is huge in this one. He towers over Oswald, which makes the whole "arresting him" part feel impossible from the start.
There is a moment where Pete hides behind a tiny tree. It is obviously too small for him, but the cartoon logic lets it happen anyway.
I like how Oswald uses his ears for everything. They aren't just ears; they are tools, or sometimes they just fly off.
It reminds me a bit of the rougher edges in The Blue Eagle, even though that is a totally different kind of movie about tough guys. Both have that 1920s grit where people just hit each other to solve problems.
The pacing is fast. Like, really fast.
If you blink, you miss three different jokes about Oswald falling down a hill. It’s got that high-energy slapstick that makes modern cartoons feel a bit slow and over-explained.
I found myself wondering if they had a plan when they started drawing this. Or if they just said, "make the rabbit go fast."
There is a bear that shows up toward the end. It looks nothing like a real bear, more like a black blob with teeth. 🐻
The ending is kind of a letdown if you want a big resolution. It just sort of... stops after the big chase.
But that is how these shorts were back then. They were meant to be seen between bigger films like Daring Deeds at the theater.
I watched it twice just to see the background drawings. They are very simple, just some lines for mountains, but they have a nice mood to them.
It is not a masterpiece or anything. It’s just a fun relic of a time when a rabbit could ride a robot horse and nobody asked why.
You can tell Walt and his team were having a blast. Even if the physics make absolutely zero sense.
Check it out if you want to see a bit of history that isn't boring. It’s better than a lot of the stuff that came later because it doesn't try to be cute.
Oswald is actually kind of a troublemaker. I miss that vibe in modern characters who are too perfect.
Anyway, it’s five minutes of your life. You’ve wasted more time looking for a remote under the couch. 📺
