6.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Pop's Pal remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you have a weird itch for slapstick from the silent era. If you are into vintage, fast-paced chaos and don't mind the film grain looking like a sandbox, you might get a kick out of it. If you have no patience for people running in circles and exaggerated facial expressions, stay away. Far away.
The whole premise of Pop's Pal is just a setup for a loud, dusty shouting match. You have two dads who clearly hate each other, and they end up under the same roof because nobody knows how to use a calendar. It feels like a precursor to every bad sitcom episode ever made. 🙄
The physical comedy is… a lot. There is this one scene where they are pacing around the living room like caged tigers, and the blocking is so frantic I actually got a little dizzy. It is not exactly subtle.
I found myself staring at the background furniture more than the actors at one point. That chair in the corner looks like it has seen some things. Why is it positioned so awkwardly? Who knows.
If you have seen Hoot Toot, you know the type of energy these shorts bring. It is relentless. It never gives you a second to breathe, just constant motion and people bumping into things. It reminds me a bit of the frantic pacing in A Man's Man, though this one lacks the charm.
The middle section drags because they just keep recycling the same gag of 'I see him, I hide, I get mad.' We get it! They hate each other! Can we move on?
It is definitely not as tight as The Hostage. It feels like a rough draft that someone decided to just go ahead and film anyway. Sometimes you can see the actors almost breaking character because the choreography is just that messy.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it a historical curiosity? Sure. I am glad I watched it, but I probably won't be rushing to put it on again. It is just… a thing that happened on my screen for twenty minutes.
Maybe skip the coffee before this one. The jittery nature of the camera work is enough to keep you awake.
