5.9/10

A definitive 5.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Popular Melodies remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Okay, so if you're into old-school cartoons, especially the kind that feel like a snapshot of a different time, then Popular Melodies might be a fun little diversion. For anyone expecting a story, or really, anything beyond a few jazzy tunes and some classic animation quirks, you'll probably wonder what the fuss is about. This one's for the vintage animation enthusiasts, not your average movie night.
It's basically a sing-along, right? You've got Arthur Jarrett's voice coming through, and that famous **bouncing ball** guiding us over the lyrics. It's charming, in a very specific way. A real novelty, you know?
And then Betty Boop shows up! 🎷 She’s there for 'One Hour with You' and later, her signature 'Boop-Oop-A-Doop.' Her segments are really the main draw, I think. She just *pops* off the screen, even in these old black and white shorts.
The animation, it's very much of its era. Simple, but with a lot of character. Betty's movements are so fluid, even when the rest of the world around her is a bit... static.
Mae Questel, as always, gives Betty her distinctive voice. It's hard to imagine Betty without her.
Arthur Jarrett's voice, it's got that classic big band, crooner sound. A real time capsule. The whole thing feels like you’ve stepped into a nickelodeon for a few minutes.
Sometimes the bouncing ball feels a little off, like it's not quite keeping up. Or maybe it's just my eyes trying to follow too fast. It's part of the fun, though.
And the transitions between Jarrett's numbers and Betty's scenes are pretty abrupt. No fancy fades or anything, just, *boom*, new scene. Very direct.
You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you this moment matters, but it’s just a song. A nice song, mind you.
It’s a quick trip, really. A glimpse into what passed for entertainment back in '33. If you love seeing how animation evolved, or you're a big Betty Boop fan, you'll get a kick out of it.
Otherwise, it's probably a miss. But hey, it's short, so no big commitment. Like a little animated dessert.
