6.8/10

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Pups Is Pups remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like puppies and kids making a mess, you should watch this today. It is only twenty minutes long and moves faster than a scared cat. 🐕
People who want a perfectly polished story with deep meaning will probably hate it. This is for people who find it funny when a dozen dogs ruin a fancy party.
I watched this one while eating breakfast and it felt like the right vibe. It's the first time they used that famous Our Gang theme music, which is pretty cool to hear for the first time.
The whole thing starts with Wheezer and his dog. The dog has puppies and Wheezer is just so happy about it.
His face is very expressive. You can tell he actually likes those dogs.
Then we get Farina. Farina is easily the best part of these old shorts.
He is trying to keep all these puppies together but they keep running away every time a bell rings. It’s a very simple joke.
A bell dings, and the dogs just bolt. They go under fences and over porches.
It happens like four or five times. It should be annoying but it’s actually kind of funny because of how frustrated Farina looks. 😫
The pace is a bit like Speed to Spare in how it just doesn't stop moving. There isn't much time for the characters to breathe.
The gang decides to enter a local pet show. But this isn't a normal pet show.
It is a very fancy pet show for rich people. The contrast is where the comedy comes from.
You have these kids with mud on their faces bringing in animals that look like they haven't had a bath in a year. It reminds me a bit of the social awkwardness in Poker Faces, but with more dirt.
There is a scene with a lady and her prize dog that is just waiting for a disaster. You know exactly what is going to happen.
The puppies show up and everything falls apart. It is pure slapstick.
I noticed one of the kids in the background of the pet show looks extremely confused. Like he wasn't told they were filming yet.
The sound quality is a bit fuzzy. It was 1930, so they were still figuring out the microphones.
Sometimes the kids scream and it peeks the audio. It’s a bit loud on the ears if you wear headphones.
Jackie Cooper is in this too. He has this very serious face for a little kid.
He takes the pet show very seriously. It makes the ending feel a bit more sweet than you'd expect from a comedy about dogs running through mud.
The puppy they call "Goopy" is the standout. That dog has more personality than some of the human actors.
I think the movie gets better once they get to the actual show. The first half with Farina wandering around is okay, but it drags a little.
Even for a short film, it feels like they were padding the time with the bell gag. But hey, it's cute puppies.
I don't mind looking at puppies for an extra five minutes. 🐾
It’s not a masterpiece of cinema. It’s just a bunch of kids and dogs being chaotic.
Sometimes that is all you need on a Tuesday morning. It’s better than most of the stuff they try to pass off as family comedy now.
If you have twenty minutes, give it a look. Just turn your volume down a little for the screaming parts. 📣
