6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Sitting on the Moon remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a massive soft spot for 1930s musical fluff or you’re on some weird quest to watch every B-movie ever made. If you want something that actually moves, or if you get annoyed by plot threads that just vanish into thin air, you are going to hate this.
It’s not exactly high art, but it’s got that specific, dusty energy of a film that was clearly made over a long weekend on a shoestring budget. 📽️
The whole thing feels like a stage play that someone accidentally filmed. You get two songwriters who are supposed to be talented, but we mostly just hear them talking about how great they are. Then, of course, the ex-film star shows up and everything gets complicated for about ten minutes before the blackmailer shows up.
The blackmailer is honestly the highlight. He’s just so dull. It’s like he’s trying to be a menace but he’s really just an inconvenience at a dinner party.
I found myself thinking about A Hint to Brides while watching this, mainly because they share that same frantic, desperate energy to be funny without actually landing the jokes. It’s a bit like watching a puppy try to jump over a fence that’s just a little too high. You root for it, but you know it’s not making the leap.
There is a moment near the middle where a character stares directly into the camera for, I swear, four seconds too long. It’s not even a dramatic stare. He just looks lost. Like he forgot his lines and was waiting for someone to yell ‘cut’ that never came.
It’s not as chaotic as (When Spirits Move), but it’s got that same “we have exactly one camera and three hours of film” feel to it.
Don’t go looking for deep meaning. Just watch it with a coffee and accept that sometimes, movies are just stuff that happens in a room until the end. It’s harmless, it’s forgettable, and occasionally, it’s weirdly fun to just stare at the sets and wonder why they picked those specific curtains. 🌙
