5.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. So You Won't T-T-T-Talk remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you’re a completionist for early comedy shorts or you have a weird soft spot for Shemp Howard’s specific brand of frantic energy. If you hate movies where the volume is set to 'yelling' for the entire runtime, you will probably want to turn this off after about three minutes. 🤷♂️
It’s not exactly high art, but it has that strange, dusty charm that movies from this time period sometimes manage to hold onto, even when the script is barely holding itself together.
Watching So You Won't T-T-T-Talk feels a bit like being trapped in a crowded room with people who have had way too much coffee. Everyone is moving fast, talking over each other, and the whole thing has this weird, frantic rhythm that never really settles down to let you breathe.
There’s a moment about halfway through where someone delivers a line so poorly it’s actually kind of impressive. I had to rewind it just to make sure I heard it right. Nobody seemed to care, they just kept right on moving to the next bit of shouting.
Shemp Howard is, well, he’s Shemp. He’s doing the same stuff he does in Goofy Ghosts, just with slightly different furniture around him. If you like the way he gets wide-eyed when he’s confused, you’ll get your fill here. It’s almost like he’s in his own private movie happening parallel to the rest of the cast.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Torchy in High, though this one feels a lot more disposable. You watch it, you giggle at how dated the humor is, and then you forget it before you even stand up to get a glass of water.
It’s not a waste of a life, but it’s definitely a waste of a Tuesday afternoon if you had chores to do. Still, there’s something nice about how small and unpretentious it is. It isn't trying to change the world. It’s just trying to keep the camera rolling until the budget runs out. 🎞️
