7.2/10

A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Soup for Nuts remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you are a completionist for early Bob Hope or just love those weird, forgotten musical shorts from the 30s. If you hate variety acts or need a plot that actually moves, you'll probably want to turn this off five minutes in. It’s barely a movie, really, more of a showcase for people who play instruments really, really fast.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed in a frantic weekend. Bob Hope is the MC at the Carlton Club, which is clearly struggling. The tension is supposed to be this jealous wife who won't let any women perform on stage because she’s worried about her husband’s roving eye. It’s a thin premise, but it works as a frame for the musical numbers.
The musical segments are… something else. You get The Heat Waves and The Saxon Sisters, and everyone is just throwing their heart into it like their lives depend on the tempo. There’s this one transition where the band just keeps playing while Bob Hope stands there looking slightly confused, which is honestly the most human moment in the whole thing. He’s just standing there, folks.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic pacing in Smiles where you’re just waiting for the next song to start. The plot is basically just a placeholder for the orchestra, which is led by Al Goodman. He’s all over the screen, and I swear he’s having more fun than the actors.
The humor is a bit dry, even for Hope. You can see the seeds of his later style, but it’s not quite polished yet. It’s jagged. It’s messy. And I kinda liked that.
If you’re looking for the tension found in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, you’re in the wrong place. This is just a light, slightly sweaty time capsule. It doesn’t try to be profound, and thank goodness for that. Sometimes you just need to watch people play instruments in a room that looks like it’s about to close for good. 🎺
It ends so abruptly that I actually checked to see if my player had frozen. Nope. That’s just it. Credits roll, and we’re done. Maybe that’s the best way to handle a story like this.
