If you want a light, breezy watch, stay far away. Tao wang is heavy. It’s a movie for people who don't mind a film that punches you in the gut and keeps on walking. If you’re into historical grit or just really good at staring into the void, you’ll find something here. If you need a hero or a clean ending, you’re going to hate it. 🏚️
The whole thing feels dusty. Like, real, actual grit in your teeth. It’s about the people from the North-East being pushed out, and the camera really loves showing you the exact moment someone realizes they aren't going back home. That kind of silence is loud, you know?
There’s this one shot of a crowded road that just goes on forever. It felt like the movie was trying to run out of film, and honestly, that made it better. It’s not trying to look pretty for the sake of being pretty. It looks like it was made in the mud.
It’s not as polished as The Royal Family of Broadway, and thank god for that. You can feel the desperation in every frame. Sometimes the pacing hits a wall, but maybe that’s the point. War doesn't move in a straight line, does it? It just sits there, choking everything.
I caught myself looking at the background extras more than the main cast for a while. There’s one guy in a hat near the back of the village scenes who looks like he genuinely hasn't slept in a week. Maybe he hadn't. It adds this weird, jagged texture to the whole thing.
Is it perfect? No. Does it need to be? Probably not. It’s a bit like watching Sister Against Sister but with way less domestic drama and way more existential dread. It just hangs there. It doesn't ask you to like it, and honestly, that’s refreshing. 🎞️
The last ten minutes are just… quiet. I sat there for a bit after it finished. That’s rare these days. Most stuff just tries to scream at you until you stop paying attention. This one? It just let me sit with the bad vibes. And I mean that in the best way possible.
