6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Big Bluff remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're looking for something tight and logical, walk away now. This movie is a bit like that one guest at a party who talks too loud and keeps changing their story. You’ll probably have a good time if you like old-school farce, but if you need your plots to actually make sense, you’re going to hate it. It’s a bit of a mess, but a fun one.
There's this moment about thirty minutes in where the pacing just hits a wall. You can tell they were trying to stretch a thin premise into a feature-length runtime. It feels like they had enough plot for a short, but someone decided we needed another twenty minutes of people running in and out of doorways.
I couldn't help but think about Dangerous to Men while watching this. There’s a similar vibe of frantic energy where everyone is just kind of yelling at each other in fancy clothes. Except here, the stakes feel even lower, which makes it weirdly more relaxing.
It’s not as sharp as Tell Me Tonight, which really knew how to balance its musical bits with the drama. The Big Bluff feels like it’s constantly tripping over its own feet. Still, there’s a certain charm to how hard everyone is trying to sell this nonsense. 🎬
The cinematography is fine, I guess. It doesn't do much, but it doesn't get in the way. It’s just very… there. You can tell they were filming on a schedule, and nobody had the time to go back and fix the lighting in that one scene where the shadows are all over the place.
If you’re a fan of old German cinema, you’ll find plenty to like, or at least plenty to tolerate. Don't expect to have your mind blown. Expect to be mildly amused for an hour or so, and then probably forget the entire plot by dinner time.
