6.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Painted Woman remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you’re a completionist for early thirties dramas or you just really need to see Spencer Tracy look like he hasn't slept in a week. It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even a particularly smooth ride. But there is a weird, salty energy to it that kept me watching.
If you hate movies that move at the speed of a leaking boat or get annoyed when characters make decisions that defy all logic, stay away. Far away. Seriously.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed in a room that smelled like old wet wool. The premise is one of those classic 'everything goes wrong because of a secret' setups, but it feels rushed. Like, they had a script that was too long and just decided to chop out all the scenes that actually explained why anyone likes each other.
Peggy Shannon plays Kiddo, and she’s running from a murder. Why did she kill? Who knows. It’s barely a footnote. She ends up on a ship, gets dumped on an island, and suddenly we’re doing the whole marriage plot thing.
Enter Boynton. He’s the guy who dumped her, then comes back to find her married, and he’s livid. It feels less like romantic jealousy and more like he just hates being told 'no'. When he eventually winds up dead, the movie turns into a courtroom-lite drama where everyone points fingers.
Watching Tom (the husband) doubt his own wife immediately? It’s frustrating. It’s not deep, it’s just annoying. It reminds me a bit of the tension in The Informer, but without the actual grit or the payoff. It’s all posturing.
I found myself comparing it to the pacing of Slashing Swords, but this is way less fun. It’s just people walking into rooms and shouting about honor or betrayal. The stakes are supposed to be life and death, but it feels like they’re arguing over who forgot to pay the bar tab.
It’s not a total waste, but it definitely feels like a relic. A dusty, salty, slightly confused relic. 🌊
