5.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Town Stands on Its Head remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for old-school farces where everyone is sweating through their collars, The Town Stands on Its Head is worth your time. It's basically a game of 'who can be the most nervous' played by a town full of greedy idiots. If you hate movies where the whole plot hinges on one simple lie that nobody bothers to correct, you’re gonna have a bad time here.
There is this one scene where they are trying to wine and dine the salesman, and the timing is just deliciously clumsy. Nobody is on the same page, and you can see them all trying to act normal while their eyes are darting around like they've seen a ghost.
It’s got that Gogol energy, where the absurdity is the point. Honestly, the way they throw money and fake smiles at a total stranger is kind of universal, even if the clothes look a bit dusty now.
I wasn't sure what to expect going in. It’s definitely not as punchy as The Jazz Singer, but it has a weird, frantic rhythm that I didn't mind.
The pacing is a bit all over the place. Sometimes it feels like it’s racing toward the end, and then it just stops to let a character ramble for a bit too long. 🙄
It feels very much like a stage play captured on film. There’s a theatrical stiffness to it that I found kind of charming, though I know some folks want more 'cinematic' movement. You get what you get with these older comedies.
It’s not a masterpiece, but it made me chuckle more than once. Sometimes that’s enough, right? Just watch it for the sheer panic in the mayor's eyes when he realizes he might be bankrupting the town for absolutely no reason.
